Reports created by accountants can be used by governments, to decide how much tax is owed by a company, or potential business partners, before a deal is signed. As well as preparing and checking financial documents and reports for clients, accountants also offer a range of services including analysis of budgets, financial and investment planning, information technology consulting and some legal advice. Accountants also help to make sure that an organisation is being run correctly and efficiently, its public records are accurate and that it pays its taxes on time.

Most employers will require that applicants for accounting jobs have a bachelor's degree in accounting or a related field. It is possible to work as an accountant without a degree if the applicant completes accountancy exams and courses like ACCA, which do not require a prior knowledge of accountancy. It usually takes about three to four years to pass these exams and they provide an in-depth knowledge of accountancy.
