Actuary jobs involve applying theories of a statistical and financial nature in order to solve business problems. This includes the ability to analyse future financial events, especially when future payment amounts or the timing of future payments is uncertain. Actuaries give advice on financial and commercial issues for organisations through resolving complex problems of a mathematical nature. This work could be described as ‘risk management', because it involves evaluating the likeliness of an event and what it could end up costing a company. The analytical skills required for the job means the profession can be used to resolve issues regarding investment, consultancy, life and general insurance and pensions.

To have an Actuary career in the UK, it is essential to qualify as a Fellow of one of the two professional Actuarial bodies. These are the Faculty of Actuaries (based in Edinburgh); and the Institute of Actuaries (based in London).
