Computer-Aided Design (CAD) jobs are available in various industries and work sectors. CAD is the use of computers to assist the design process and is required in everything from product design to architecture and engineering. The work is as diverse as developing aircraft to designing jewellery, depending on what sector you choose to specialise in. If you're just starting out your career in CAD, one way to get the training and skills required for the job is to become a technician apprentice in engineering. These types of schemes are usually only offered to applicants aged between 16 and 19 but entry can be possible up to the age of 24. To join a scheme you will need four GCSEs or an appropriate intermediate GNVQ/GSVQ. On the schemes training is mainly practical and carried out on the job, with theory work being completed at college.
The work is as diverse as developing aircraft to designing jewellery.
Degree courses in CAD are available all over the country and teach skills in design, IT and advanced manufacturing using a range of specialist industry standard CAD software programmes. Graduates with experience of industry standard CAD tools are at an advantage when looking for CAD work, which will help them get employed once the course has been completed.
