It's essential to have the appropriate licence, be a skilled driver and enjoy driving to get a courier job. It's also important to have literacy and numeric skills, which are required for completing delivery and expense records. It is also necessary to be able to plan routes and read maps plus most motorbike couriers have their own bike that's taxed and has an MOT. Being able to speak another language can be an advantage if dealing with overseas deliveries and a basic knowledge of vehicle maintenance is also useful.

To get a courier job you don't need any academic qualifications although there are apprenticeship schemes available to young people wishing to start a career in this field. Most couriers are expected to take responsibility for the up-keep of their vehicles and making sure they are always roadworthy.
