Medical sales jobs involve promoting pharmaceutical products to health care professionals. The role requires keeping up-to-date with new and current medical products on the market in order to be able to discuss them in-depth with potential customers. A medical sales job will involve presenting products to clients, selling them and providing an after-sales service. The job is demanding and applicants for the position need to be persuasive, commercially aware and understand complicated clinical data.

Most medical sales jobs will request that employees are educated to degree level and graduates with a medical, marketing or ethical sales background will be at an advantage when applying. Other degree subjects are acceptable, although some companies may request a science related degree like biology, dentistry or nursing. It will also be useful to have a general knowledge of anatomy, medical conditions and treatments. Work experience within the sales field or previous customer service work may also be an advantage when applying for a medical sales job.

Training for a medical sales job is extremely intense and can take as long as six months to complete. Once the training is finished, sales representatives will be required to pass an examination by the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry (ABPI). The exam tests on areas including anatomy, infectious disease and pharmacology. Once experience has been gained within the role, there is room for career progression into various managerial positions. Medical sales jobs can also be a route into other areas within the company, like marketing.
