Anyone who wants to start a career as a nurse needs to complete a pre-registration course, applicants can choose between either a degree or diploma programme. Training for these courses is carried out at Higher Education Institutes and the courses last between three and four years. The training involves a combination of theory and practical work and on completion students will receive both an academic and a professional qualification. There is no minimum entry requirement to enrol on either course although applicants must be of good character and demonstrate evidence of literacy.

After a pre-registration programme has been completed, nurses must then register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). Once registered with the NMC, the qualification will be recognised throughout the UK and job applications for nursing jobs can be made. There is no upper age limit on applications onto the training courses from mature applicants. This means that anyone who wants to start a career in nursing later on in life have the option to do so.
