Most retail companies offer on-the-job training in the skills that are essential for working within the industry. Many of these organisations also provide the opportunity to gain nationally recognised qualifications through in-house training schemes. Potential candidates will need to demonstrate their ability to multi-task, have leadership skills and a strong customer focus. When hiring for retail management roles, employers will be looking for individuals who are level-headed, enthusiastic, have good business sense and work well under pressure.

To work in some areas of the retail industry including fashion, IT and food, a degree in the related field may be preferred by employers. If you do not have a relevant degree, get as much work experience within the sector to help you to secure a job as a retail manager.
